A little bit about why
SurfaceMax P-107 is "New" and "Revolutionary" and yet has a 17 year proven
performance record: This product was
developed by a chemist specializing in polymer technologies in 1990. Originally
he had been called upon to create additives to achieve special performance
characteristics for a Cal-Trans slurry seal spec. nobody could meet. He allowed
a company to meet the spec and secure the huge slurry-seal contract.
A while later the same contractors (who also did regular sealcoating) mentioned it would be great if
he developed something for use with conventional sealcoating. All this was done
in California (as you probably know CA was by far the leader in slurry sealing
and asphalt emulsions long before they spread across the rest of the country)
The result was what we named SurfaceMax P-107 (to the chemist it
was just formula # 107) In the
1990's we became affiliated with this chemist through decorative cement
technologies. He was a pioneer in that field way back in 1980 long before other companies
started and the decorative concrete "boom" started. Much like the
asphalt additives his concrete products were originally designed for bridge-deck
resurfacing and concrete repairs under highway traffic. Later they were
developed for decorative use. For various reasons (none
related to the products) we no longer "push" our decorative concrete line still
made by this same man but you can see them on our old website
here
if you want to take a look (we do still distribute them). Some of the
"top-end" decorative concrete products on the market today contain his
materials.
At the same time he learned we were also heavily involved in sealcoating and sent us a
sample of "107". After trying this product we became the exclusive
public distributor
for this amazing asphalt emulsion modifier. And nobody
bought it...
It's not inexpensive and back then coal tar sealers were much cheaper than today
and in ready supply, there were many long-time proven additives for coal tar (and
still are) so why would a contractor with a proven mix of a quality coal tar
pavement sealer at low prices and a good additive be interested in trying asphalt emulsion?
Much less a modifier for it? So due to lack of demand we stopped marketing the
product.
WOW how a single year can
change things! In 2006 the coal tar sealer market went crazy, some people
are trying to drum up environmental reasons it is bad (for their
personal gain...that is not an issue with us, however the resulting negative "environmental"
publicity did affect some consumers) and then coal tar ran out! It
still had supply problems in 2007 in some places and the price has skyrocketed!
Supplies were short, contractors were unable to get the sealer they were used
to, and to top it off supply & demand drove prices up dramatically when it was
available leaving many contractors forced to use asphalt emulsions for customers
used to a higher quality (in general un-modified asphalt emulsion
sealcoating is not as durable and doesn't have the curing properties of coal
tar) So all in a year or so the world has changed
in sealcoating.
Many companies rushed to market with new "miracle" additives
which most contractors have been very dissatisfied with, various versions of "fast
dry" and viscosity modifying" additives many claiming to work with all types of
sealers suddenly appeared on the market. Some new "miracle" asphalt based
sealers have appeared in the last couple of years. (One based in Texas we
think is quite amusing, they claim it is well known in Texas yet of over 10
large, long-time sealcoating contractors we know here not one had even heard of
it, much less used it until they started advertising heavily in magazines and we
still don't know anyone using it!)
Unfortunately we could
not help in 2006 because we had not foreseen or prepared for a demand for this modifier, it
was so sad to hear tales of bad sealing jobs and work missed knowing if we only
had the material available to them their problems would be solved.
Well that didn't happen in 2007!
In February we started selecting a few contractors at the NPE in Nashville to
allow to purchase a 1 gallon sample they could order & try for
themselves to see if what we say is true. It didn't take but a few gallons
applied in a worse-case entrances or other high-traffic areas to prove it works
the way we claim. Once theyexperienced it for themselves, their mind is forever
changed about what asphalt sealcoating can be and a handful of smart contractors
wanting better products for their customers and better profits for themselves
started ordering drums and pallets of drums!
Those contractors are now "blowing away" their competition with SurfaceMax (and at better margins) This product is not for
everybody and we are not making it available to everybody.
It is for the
contractor who will be using asphalt emulsion that wants to be able to
"out-quality" his competition with a product no one else can touch, who knows
the fact as we do that a consumer does not care about price but about value for
that price.
A "cheap" sealing job isn't a bargain if it doesn't last and perform
well. SurfaceMax P-107 will give those contractors a competitive edge, and based
on minimum purchases (no franchise fees or other "mumbo-jumbo") we
will grant exclusive areas for contractors. You may wonder
"why haven't we heard about it from the California contractors?
Simple, just the
same as we predict will happen with this product as it takes over the rest of
the country no contractor there wants to reveal the "secret" of why their sealer
lasts so much longer, looks so much better, and mainly how he can produce
results other people can't imagine much less duplicate!
